Here SHE is!

I come from a family of 4 children. When I was young my mother took us to the photographer every year to get a portrait made for my father’s birthday. These poster-sized portraits were then pinned to the dining room wall to linger there for a year until replaced by a new one. This took 16 years until my parents got divorced.

As a child I hated it every year, but now I can see it as a fascinating coming of age series. So I was wondering if I could use the series for my painted prints and after 9 months and 522 colored squares I can say it has delivered a fantastic series: SHE.

With this series I follow a long tradition to make at least one self-portrait as an artist. Or perhaps it is better to speak of an autobiographical portrait.  As Gustave Courbet explained to his patron Alfred Bruyas (1817-1832): “I took quite a few self-portraits while my attitude to life changed. You could say I wrote my autobiography.”
